On Monday 9th February 2026, the students of Grade 7 went on a field trip to “Hutan Organik” in Megamendung. The trip was accompanied by our homeroom teachers and several other teachers as well. The purpose of this trip was to learn about organic farming and forest conservation, understand the importance of protecting our ecosystem, and connect more closely with nature.
The trip started by bus from school, then we continued the journey by minibus to reach Hutan Organik Megamendung. The journey took about two hours. Some of us slept during the ride, while others talked with their friends. When we finally arrived, most of us felt excited. The sky was painted with baby blues and warm greys, the smell of the rain tingling the tips of our noses and nerves with a sense of calm just like it always did on these particularly damp days. When we first stepped into the main aula, everyone was already clad in their rain suits, fresh water droplets still rolling from the plastic material. Of course, everyone was uncomfortable, who wouldn’t be in time like this? The air was balmy, almost humid even though the drizzling outside continued on. Everyone was mushed together in that aula, trying to fit inside the space that had a maximum capacity for only half of us. But still, we all dealt with it. At last , we all made it work and the teachers and staff managed to handle it very well. Then, we all sat to each other neatly.
While waiting for the main activities to begin, we played a mini game. Since we could not choose what team, we had to socialize with new people, which was a great way to bond with one another. The whole minigame was basically just playing rock paper scissors. However, the catch was that every time one team won, the losing team had to join the winning team. In the end, the team with the most members became the winner.
Then, it was finally time to begin the real activity: hiking. It was not some sort of mountain climbing, where the top was thousands of meters tall, but just a brief walk through the forest. Before that, we went to visit the original founder’s grave. Which was located near the chicken pen. Amidst walking, the staff explained about the types of trees that are planted in the forest. They also mentioned that there were approximately 14.000 trees planted.
The last activity was a Q&A session with Bu Rosita. We were very excited because we were curious about her story. We wanted to know what motivated her to build this forest and how she managed it. From the discussion, we learned that Bu Rosita truly cares about the future. She realized that planting trees comes with many benefits since trees are used for many things. The recent floods in Indonesia were caused by extreme deforestation. Their roots help absorb and store water in the soil, in order to avoid flash floods or landslides. Other than that, planting trees can help with air pollution since trees let out oxygen during photosynthesis. That is why she believes planting trees is one of the best solutions.
From the Q&A session, we learned that Bu Rosita first had to improve the soil condition because it was originally acidic and not fertile. She added fertilizer to make the soil more fertile. After that, she planted vegetables first because they are easier to grow and can also help improve the soil quality. Once the soil became healthier and more fertile, Bu Rosita then started planting coffee trees. This is because coffee helps hydrate plants by improving soil structure, which helps with the water infiltration. Other than planting it, using it to water plants is also a very good way to make them grow faster.
From the discussion, we were also interested in one of our friends’ questions. He asked why Bu Rosita did not plant oil palm trees since they grow faster and can make a lot of money. Bu Rosita explained that oil palm trees absorb a large amount of water to grow. Most of the water is used for transpiration, transporting nutrients, and maintaining the quality of the fruit. However, using too much water can harm the environment and cause water shortages.
During the trip, we also learned several important life values. We had to adjust and adapt to many things, such as the food, the place, and other unfamiliar situations. Teamwork was very important during the mini games and the hiking activities. Even when we were not working in teams, we still had to look out for one another and keep each other safe. We also needed to be respectful by avoiding inappropriate language, listening carefully to instructions, and controlling ourselves, especially on the bus and when someone was speaking in front of us. At the end of the day, we felt very grateful for the opportunity to explore the forest.
The activities there were very exciting. Everything about the forest was a new experience for us, so it was all very interesting. Even though the place felt unfamiliar, especially compared to the city we live in, the people there left a very good impression. Everyone was friendly and generous, which made me feel safer and more confident while exploring the forest.
In conclusion, this field trip was not only about learning about nature, but also about important life lessons. We learned that protecting the environment is not only the government’s job, but also our responsibility. Bu Rosita showed us that real change needs courage and sacrifice. She even sold her house to replant the forest because she cares about the future of our Earth. From this trip, we understood that changing the world can start from small actions. We can plant trees, reduce plastic use, save water, and take care of our surroundings. If everyone does small good actions, we can make a big difference. We hope that in the future more people will care about problems like air pollution, water pollution, and global warming. With technology and strong awareness, we believe we can create a cleaner and greener world. This trip reminded us that the future of the Earth is in our hands.
